In April 1942, Lale Sokolov, a Slovak Jew, was violently transferred to the concentration camps in Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, they put him to work as Ttowierer (the German word for tattoo artist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners.

Imprisoned for more than two and a half years, Lale witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism, as well as incredible bravery and compassion. He risks his own life and uses his privileged position to exchange jewelry and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive.
