Set against the beautiful Mediterranean backdrop, Swept Away is Lina Wertmuller’s most famous and controversial film about sex, love and politics. On a sleek yacht sailing off the coast of Sardinia, Raffaella (Mariangela Melato), a wealthy and dazzling capitalist, takes pleasure in tormenting Gennarino (Giancarlo Giannini), a communist sailor. Fate weaves a different scenario and the roles are reversed when they both find themselves stranded together on a desert island. Raffaella must submit to Gennarino in order to survive, culminating in a dramatic climax when they are rescued. They must determine whether their love can survive the harsh realities of civilization.
