“When I look back at my childhood, I wonder how I survived. Of course this is a miserable childhood: a happy childhood is almost never yours. The ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse is the miserable Irish- Catholic childhood.
Dont Make a Sound by Ragan (PDF)(EBOOK)

Then began a treatise by Pulitzer Prize winner Frank McCourt, who was born to Irish immigrants during the Brooklyn Depression and grew up in a slum in Limerick, Ireland. Frank’s mother Angela had no money to feed the children because Frank’s father Malachy rarely worked and when he did so he drank his wages. But Malachy – annoying, irresponsible and convincing – does not fuel Frank’s appetite for one thing he can offer: a story. Frank lives for the story of his father from Cuchulain, who saved Ireland, and the angel in step seven, who brought his mother baby.

Maybe this is the story that contributed to Frank’s survival. Frank wore a diaper towel, asked for a pig’s head for Christmas dinner, and collected coal from the sidewalk to light a fire. He endured poverty, almost hunger and the usual cruelty of relatives and neighbors – and yet lived to tell his story with eloquence and joy and incredible forgiveness.

Angela’s ashes, embellished with Frank McCourt’s extraordinary humor and compassion on every page, is a wonderful book that contains all the classics..
