Review of the film "Major Thunder: Chum Doctor". Batment is forever
Frankly, on "Major Thunder" Personally, I did not put big hopes. Firstly, the phrase "Russian film comic" immediately causes flashbacks about "Defenders" And "Black lightning" : Still, Andreasyan and Bekmambetov pretty poisoned the ground for any further experiments in the genre. Secondly, a short prequel about the thunder, which came out back in 2017 and was supposed to warm up the audience before the full mark, made the impression of a very expensive fan film, but nothing more. Well, thirdly, the arch “plague doctor”, which formed the basis of the picture, is simply bad, as, in general, and all the early comics of Bubble Publishing House. This is a shitty detective about catching a maniac, with terrible dialogs, flat jokes and characters, in which a successful design covers the lack of characters. Over the years and the emergence of sensible screenwriters, the situation has recovered, but if the Babblovites were going to endure the first plot about thunder close to the text, the disaster would not be avoided.
In general, there were enough reasons for fear, but for optimism-somehow not very. However, the filmmakers have proved that it is sometimes useful to discard the negative experience and, as Batman in "League" Snider, at least once rely on faith.
Thunder is by no means Bruce Wayne, and therefore lives in a shabby apartment, which literally falls apart into pieces
Igor Thunder – the coolest policeman Peter. He opens the door to any gangster den, is not afraid of fights and alone drags statistics on openness in his native department. But there are two things with which the detective is unable to cope. The first is his own eccentric character, because of which thunder cannot get along with his colleagues and regularly leads the boss under the monastery. And the second is corruption, which permeates the city through. The oligarch blows an architectural monument to open a casino, the outskirts are suffocating from the stench of a landfill placed against any norms, and the impudent major remains unpunished after he knocked down a little girl. How a simple trace can deal with this? No. But suddenly in St. Petersburg, the Avenger is declared in the mask of a medieval plague doctor. In his manifestos, he claims that lawlessness is a disease, and there is only one medicine – fire. The trouble is that the more charred corpses the police find, the stronger the killer is supported by the townspeople. Thunder needs to catch a psychopath, until it came to a folk riot.
The plot of the “plague doctor” is far away from the original source so as not to repeat his mistakes, but at the same time it is quite faithful to him to please those who still liked the comic book. This is all the same free retelling "Seven" David Fincher, but if already "Batman" Matt Reeves is possible why Bubble is impossible? In addition, the obviously gloomy story about the fishing of a maniac maniac is so generously flavored with humor and action that the neo-nuar automatically turns into a family comedy action movie. And this scheme, it seems, did not have such a variation. Yes, the main detective intrigue can be unraveled at the very beginning, and in principle, the plot, if desired, can be predicted for the move – the creators love cliche. But there is nothing important here, but how.
“Major Thunder” is perhaps not so much a film adaptation of a particular Bubble line as a kind of concentrate of the film comic book. He was removed as if with the understanding that the second attempt may not be, and therefore we must pay tribute to all and at once. There is something from Nolan, a little more from Snyder, a little more from Schumacher and a lot from Sam Reimi in the Plague Doctor. But if the same “Black Lightning” was just aim "Spider-Man" The plot, then the "Major Thunder" borrows the tone. This is a movie that is not shy about its brightness, cartoon and naivety. It fully recognizes its comic origin and squeezes out of it to the maximum. Here Peter is more like Gotham than to the real northern capital, the police department looks like a site from some "Death weapons" , And the Astmatik rich man is carrying an oxygen cylinder made of pure gold. Moreover, all this eclecticism, the wild mixture of French with Nizhny Novgorod, looks surprisingly organic. Yes, here it is – the Russian cinematic universe, born of the same love both to Western blockbusters, and to the national color. And neither the Medical Man with a machine gun, nor the Volga with wings are needed in it.
The plague doctor's costume is so similar to Batman's uniforms that even the characters of the film notes this
In the thunder itself, you can see the features of Gleb Zhelov, and Danila Bagrov, and John McClain. He is stubborn, but fundamental, rude, but charming. Tikhon Zhizhevsky – unequivocal find. He is much more charismatic than Alexander Gorbatov, who played the same role in a short film, and makes the major more expressive than he was in the comics. Instead of a fearless knight with eyebrows in the form of lightning, we see a slightly tired, rather cynical, but persistent cop. The image is also not new, but it is pleasantly played.
The newborn Dima Dubin is supplemented by thunder – not so much Robin or Sharapov as the cricket of Jimini from "Pinocchio". It is his lips that are voiced by all the key sentences of the paintings, and the actor Alexander Teleskin manages to pronounce them with the right share of pathos, drama and naivety. Well, he looks like a club from comics just phenomenally.
What can not be said about Lyubov Aksyonov as journalist Julia Pchelolkina, but it is for the better. From a busty mannequin to work out the tactics of salvation, she finally turned into a full -fledged character. Now Beechkina is a real Russian Lois Lane with an admixture of a female cat performed by Anne Hathaway. She is smart, inventive, even more sarcastic than thunder, and, unlike her comic prototype, is not in a hurry to fall into the arms of the majoror. This is a clear progress by Bubble.
But everything is ambiguous with the villain. In fact, the plague doctor is still the same hybrid light from "Death notebooks" and green goblin, only now also in a cool technological suit. But without a mask, he is not at all impressive. All actors in the film play with deliberately excess, like Burton and Reimi, and only the performer of the role of a maniac openly replay, although the image, sort of, should be thinner and more complicated.
The main decoration of Slotonauts sister sites the "Major of the Thunder" is Alexei Maklakov as Colonel Prokopenko, a kind of St. Petersburg commissioner Gordon
Filmed "Major Thunder" excellent. Of the domestic films over the past decade, only only a juicy picture could boast "Duelist" And "Silver skates". It sounds good too, let one cover on the classics of Russian rock and makes you frown. Fortunately it sounds on the final credits. Yes, and there are no special complaints about the staging, except that the fights came out somewhat chaotic, and by the middle the pace was slightly sagged.
But it's time to pay attention to the elephant in the room: the film was released at the wrong time. Let the story itself have been nine years old, and they cut out the most controversial moments such as the Political ambitions of the villain, the Major Thunder still rhymes too much with the recent news headlines. Anyone who wants to see loyalist propaganda in the "plague doctor" will see it without difficulty. After all, there is just on one side of the barricades a militant idealist from the Internet, calling people to the streets (though not on peaceful protests, but it is the pogroms – this is an important detail), and on the other, it seems like a positive policeman, which, nevertheless,, nevertheless , pounding people in vain and does not particularly steam about some right there. As they say, oil picture.
However, there is a third party: the abominable FSBSHNIK from Moscow, which was sent to hush up excitations and sew the case as soon as possible, but more likely. And do not care about whom to plant and whose lives break. Here you have a portrait of the system, and by no means flattering. The only idea that Major Thunder really promotes is that violence is not a way out for any of the parties. You can’t burn anyone alive, but it is not recommended to beat just – it is not to solve problems with this. And there are plenty of problems, and changes are needed, as said by the Russian language.
The “Plague Doctor” is very easy to praise, because it is essentially an anomaly – a Russian film comic that does not force to shock with shame, and sometimes gives even more emotions than some films of Marvel and DC. Yes, they even argue because of him almost as zealously as because of "Batman against Superman". Regardless of whether it will put the beginning of the cinema -combat bubble or fly at the box office, the Major Thunder is already doomed to a cult status at least in narrow circles. As evidence that sometimes Russian filmmakers can still be believed.
