Hamilton named BBC Sports Person of the Year
Seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes has been voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2020.
For Hamilton, this is the second such award, while the first came in 2014.
Hamilton is one of F1’s greatest drivers and this year he equaled Michael Schumacher’s great record for his seventh championship title. For the British this title was the fourth in a row. He also broke many other World Championship records, including beating Schumacher for the most wins. Lewis has won 95 races so far, while the German has 91.
“I want to congratulate all the incredible nominees. I am very proud of what they have achieved and want to thank everyone who voted for me. I did not expect this, knowing that there are so many great opponents.
I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas – it was a very unusual year and I want to mention pin up all frontline workers and all children around the world. I want you to try to stay positive during this difficult time. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Hamilton quotes the BBC.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson came in second and jockey Holly Doyle in third.
In addition to them, boxer Tyson Fury, member of the England cricket team StuartBrodi, snooker player Ronnie O’Sullivan claimed the main award.
It was previously reported that Hamilton is close to signing a three-year contract with Mercedes.
