My disease is as rare as it is known. It is a form of severe combined immunodeficiency, but it is actually allergic to the world. I did not leave my home, did not leave my home in fifteen years. The only ones I’ve ever seen are my mother and my nurse, Carla.
But one day a moving van arrives. New neighbors next door. I look out the window and see him. He is tall, thin and wears a full black and black t-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers and a black knitted hat that completely covers his hair. He catches me and looks at me. I stare back. His name is Olly. I want to learn everything about him and I do. I’m learning he’s funny and tough. I learn that his eyes are Atlantic blue and that his screw steals silver objects. I learn that when I talk to him, my whole world opens up and I feel that I am starting to change because I want things. Wanting to get out of my bubble. Want everything, everything that the world has to offer.
