Jacques Audiard’s first film in the Spanish language
Tale
In Mexico, a lawyer gets an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel boss out of business and disappear forever by becoming the woman he always wanted to be. IMDb editor Arno Kazarian previews 12 films he’s screening at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the dangerous, strangely erotic Misericordia. On the French title card, the Indian city is misspelled as “Dehli”. Seen in Latino Slant: La Bamba Remake, Tarantino Has a BIG Mouth, Jenna & Selena SPICE Shocks! (2024). El Trio Written by Camille, Clément Ducol and Jacques Audiard Starring Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana. I came to write this after seeing the gala screening at the London Film Festival. A wild, crazy movie that combines crime, comedy, musical and thriller in one and it is a great success!
And not only that, it plays perfectly
The strength is the four actresses at the core, and Audiard staged them perfectly. Karla plays her pre- and post-transgender character in a way that feels natural to her when she publicly underplays it as an actress. It’s a powerful performance that is so timely. I’m proud to live in a time where a trans actress plays a trans role. The tragedy of leaving life, but also the promise of life that she always needed. Zoe can sing, dance, cry and laugh and everything I think an actor dreams of, let alone in one movie. I’ve never seen a movie of hers before and I’m so glad this was my first because she shines! There’s a scene with her in the car where she realizes what just happened and goes into hysterics.
And she has a beautiful voice!
Think of Margo in Me, Tonya or Glenn in Dangerous Liaisons. She should get an Oscar for this scene alone. Selena, who I was most looking forward to seeing in this movie, is absolutely amazing. She plays a mob wife, this ice-cold, seething woman, who I think she should play again, because as a young girl who was subjected to intense scrutiny and then went through a psychosis, she knows all too well what it’s like to hide something for too long. The only moment during the screening where I felt like I was having an out-of-body experience was when her character Jessi finally unleashed her emotions on us, the audience, after years of repression. Anxiety and anger can be heard in her voice. This is a testament to why she said acting is her true calling and how passionate she is about it. It would be foolish to still think that he is a Disney kid and has something to prove.
The cinematography was great
Her acting career has been truly exciting for the fan for nearly two decades and finally, the character of Adriana is like a ray of sunshine in the otherwise dark and twisted world in which the film is set. It’s moving! And it perfectly complements the work of the other three actresses. With his work, he brings love and tenderness to the story. It is important to note that this film is like an opera. It is reminiscent of Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which was also almost exclusively sung. Emotionally, it’s definitely as intense as an opera, with little moments of calm when you realize you’re watching a movie. At the end of the film, Selena’s character lies nearly unconscious in the passenger seat as her lover drives her away in anger.
it felt like a painting, very poetic but tragic
The way the camera pans across the car to her face… I’m so glad I watched it before it came out on Netflix. It’s amazing when a movie can make you feel that way. It takes you out of your everyday life and makes you a little crazy.
