The observatory’s weather data have accumulated a climate record since. Temperature and humidity readings have been collected using a sling psychrometer, a simple device containing two mercury thermometers. Where most unstaffed weather stations have undergone technology upgrades, consistent use of the sling psychrometer has helped provide scientific precision to the Mount Washington climate record. The Algonquians called the summit Waumbik, “white rocks”. The Mt. Washington Auto Road offers a one-way shuttle service to hikers — either up to, or down from the summit. The shuttle is available on a first-come, first-serve basis , and operation is weather dependent.

As of 2019, more than 161 people had died in the Presidential range, since record-keeping began in 1849. Author Nicholas Howe has detailed many of the fatalities on this mountain in his book Not Without Peril published in 2000 and updated in 2009. Reaching the summit of Mount Washington on foot is a wonderful experience, but it’s a climb, not a walk in the woods, and it is difficult. In the best conditions, strong hikers might make it to the top in two hours, average hikers could take between four and five hours, and some will even take much longer. The return hike can take just as long and is nearly as difficult. Hikers should never assume that train tickets will be available for the descent.

Ernest W. McAdams, age 22, of Stoneham, MA, froze to death January 31, 1932, near the Lizzie Bourne monument while making a winter ascent by the Cog Railway route. Signal Service, and observer at the Weather Station, died on the summit on February 26, 1872 of natural causes. The southern Presidential Range, the range in which Mount Washington sits, has some other high peaks with a variety of traverse and hut-to-hut options alongside straightforward ascents. Plenty of campsites also make the logistics of a multi-day adventure a simple affair.
Throughout the season, the Cog hosts events and offers various specials and discounts on select trains. The Mount Washington Cog Railway is open year-round, although the State Park facilities at the summit are closed to casual visitors from late October through early May. When indoor shelter is not available, or if the summit is inaccessible due to severe weather, our trains terminate at lower elevations.
