Divine G, imprisoned in Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose in this story of resilience, humanity and the transformative power of art while performing in a theater group with other incarcerated men. a film in which the actors try out for various parts of the play. The group has been criticized for not doing comedy, but their previous play was A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which is a comedy.

In Late Night with Seth Meyers: Anna Faris/ Colman Domingo/ Jose Medeles (2024). When everything is taken away from your life, it’s almost impossible to find a reason to go on. So it’s for the inmates, individuals facing an uncertain future of indefinite duration.
And in such difficult circumstances as these, one can only wonder, realistically, whether rehabilitation is ever a viable option
But some people find hope from a seemingly unlikely source—art, as chronicled in this true-to-life drama about the inmate theater program at New York City’s Sing Sing maximum-security prison. With a cast that includes both professional actors and current and former members of this talented incarcerated troupe, viewers follow the ups and downs of these men as they struggle to bring meaning and hope to their time behind bars. Director Greg Kwedar’s second film takes an up-close look at the lives of these aspiring actors, both onstage and in everyday life under conditions that most of us probably can’t even begin to imagine.
In doing so, this offering also takes viewers on a rollercoaster of emotions, from soaring joys to heartfelt disappointments, revealing the immense strength of character in these individuals
While the film’s narrative is a bit thin and convoluted at times, it’s more than made up for by the film’s stellar performances, led by Colman Domingo, Clarence Maclin, Paul Raci, and Sean San Jose, who, like everyone else in this great cast, brings unparalleled depth to his characters and interpersonal relationships, is easily among the best work in these areas I’ve seen in a long time. It’s especially poignant knowing that many of the cast can relate to their circumstances based on their own experiences, giving this release an unadulterated authenticity rarely seen on the big screen. For its efforts, "Sing Sing" has a strong chance of being a contender for the 2024 awards season, especially in the acting categories, showing what’s possible when we let our passions surface for their own sake, especially when we have nothing to lose.
