Elwood Curtis’ college dream is shattered on a two-lane highway in Florida. Having borne the brunt of an innocent mistake, he is sentenced to the hellish Nickel Academy, a brutal penitentiary sunk deep in the Jim Crow South. He meets another ward, the all-seeing Turner. Two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner gives fundamental advice on survival, Elwood warms to his optimistic outlook.
