Set in the 23rd century on Mars, the film follows the investigation of a murder case by private investigator Aline Ruby and her android partner Carlos Rivera. It is the first feature film by director Jérémie Périn. In 2018, producer Didier Creste approached him and Laurent Sarfati, creator and screenwriter of Lastman, to work on a film adaptation of his series.

I’m not kidding

Good animation, excellent world building, interesting characters, exciting action sequences and an intriguing plot. What more could you ask for? A good ending, not this rushed, convoluted mess that makes the actions of the characters in the film completely irrelevant.

Everything our main characters do, every mystery they uncover, is ultimately useless

I get what the filmmakers were trying to get across, and maybe it could have worked in a longer format, but there wasn’t enough time in 90 minutes to properly land. I didn’t regret watching Mars Express because 90% of the film was amazing. But this ending is such a disappointment that I will never watch it again and I can’t recommend it to others.
